1. Dimensions:
|
Vigil
Antislip Stair Nosings are measured in three dimensions: width
of step (A); depth of step (B); and return (C). |
|
A:
|
Width
of Step: Because steps vary in width from area to area. Vigil
Antislip Stair Nosings increase in width from 450mm to 1200mm in
standard 150mm increments. Personnel rarely walk on the very sides
of steps, so it is recommended that Stair Nosings 150mm - 300mm
narrower than the overall step width are ordered. This leaves 75mm
- 150mm bare on each side of the step, hence saving the customer
money and allowing visual inspection of the step. |
|
B:
|
Depth
of Step: Most
accidents occur on stairways when personnel slip on the leading
edge. Up to 80mm from this edge is the most important area to
be protected by Vigil Antislip Stair Nosings. Different areas,
however, have different requirements so Vigil Antislip Stair Nosings
increase in depth from 80mm to 220mm in 50mm increments. For most
situations a "B" measurement of 80mm is recommended.
|
|
C:
|
Return:
The return dimension is a standard 20mm and exists for 3 reasons;
to offer visibility whilst ascending steps, to give the Stair Nosing
added rigidity, and to offer non-slip protection right around the
leading edge. |
  |
| D: |
Leading
Edge:
Vigil Antislip offer a right angled Stair Nosing to go over grating
and a Bullnose Stair Nosing, for installation over curved chequerplate
steps. The 8mm radius offers a larger surface area of contact between
the surface and the sole but can only be installed over existing
bullnose steps.

Grade: |
Three
standard grades exist in the range of Vigil Antislip Stair Nosings:
Commercial, Industrial and Offshore. Commercial grade is normally
used in internal areas where heavy spillage and soilage does not
exist. Industrial grade is used in most external areas where there
may be spillage and/or soilage of lubricants. Offshore grade is
used in areas where there is a high build up of grease or oil. This
surface is the most severe and is not affected by very heavy spillage
and soilage of chemicals or lubricants.
|
| 3.
Colour: |
In
all Industrial or Offshore applications, the Safety Yellow color
is recommended. If Commercial grade Stair Nosings are to be utilise
internally, other colours which are more aesthetic may be preferred.
|
| 4.
Foundation: |
1.2mm
Colorbond steel is normally used as the foundation for Vigil Antislip
Stair Nosings. This patented product offers excellent resistance
to corrosion under most circumstances. If Stair Nosings are to be
used in splash zones, we recommend 1.2mm marine grade stainless
be used as a foundation. Electrolysis must be considered though
if it is being installed on galvanised steel.
|
| 5.
Installation: |
If
Vigil Antislip Stair Nosings are to be installed over plain steel
grating, universal saddle assemblies are used. These fit all sizes
of grating and consist of a galvanised saddle, galvanised pan head
metal thread and a nickel coated Nyloc locking nut. Stainless steel
saddle assemblies are also available for splash zones. The stainless
steel saddle itself is threaded to facilitate installation and reduce
the risk of dropping fasteners through the grating. Holes must first
be drilled in the Stair Nosing from the back lo the surface, in
between grating load bars and approximately 50mm in from each end.
If accurate measurements are given all Stair Nosings can be predrilled
during manufacture.
Installation over chequerplate is more straight forward and does
not require predrilling. Series 500 wafer head Tek screws are used
and will drill through Vigil Antislip and up to 10mm chequerplate
before self tapping and fastening.

600mm x 80mm x 20mm
600mm x 130mm x 20mm

Cleaning: |
Because
of the extreme hardness and chemical resistance of Vigil Antislip,
cleaning can be effected with high pressure steam or water, degreasers,
detergents or solvents. Stubborn soilage can be removed with a stiff
deck broom. If solvents have been used, hose off with water at your
earliest convenience. Do not use scrapers or wire brushes.
|
| 8.
General: |
Never
install Stair Nosings on only a portion of a stairway, as a change
of conditions is more dangerous than overall poor conditions.
Ensure
that Stair Nosings are installed correctly as loose Stair, Nosings
can be dangerous.
If
using electric or pneumatic tools to install, ensure that appropriate
safety glasses and ear protection are worn.
